Cuttack, Nov. 9: The family of a physically-challenged Plus-Two girl student, who was allegedly subjected to mental harassment by her inmates at one of the hostels of Ravenshaw University, has filed a police complaint today.

Based on the compliant, Malgodown police have registered a case under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (obscene act and song) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and started an inquiry.

"A detailed investigation into the matter is being conducted and appropriate action will be taken according to law," said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora.

The victim, a Plus Two first-year science student at Ravenshaw Junior College, was allegedly subjected to mental and physical harassment by four senior boarders at Daya hostel of Ravenshaw University, said inspector in charge of Malgodown police station D.P. Patra.

At present, the girl is undergoing treatment at the psychiatric ward of SCB Medical College and Hospital. The girl's family members had earlier alleged that some senior students of the university were repeatedly harassing their daughter, who is unable to walk properly because of nerve disorders. According to the police complaint, the inmates of the hostel used to intentionally disturb and harass her by switching off lights whenever she wanted to study at night. They also allegedly tampered with her mobile phone and even threw away her personal belongings and medicines.

"Some senior girl students used to harass my daughter. When we got the information one and a half month ago, we had brought it to the notice of the Daya hostel officials. We also brought the matter to the notice of Ravenshaw Junior College authorities yesterday," said the victim's father Anirudha Mohapatra.

Principal of Ravenshaw Junior College Rita Das said a letter had been written to the registrar and the vice-chancellor of the university to conduct a detailed inquiry into the series of events that led to such an incident inside their hostel.

"We met the student at hospital today and are trying to find out what had happened inside the hostel. Once we get a report from the university, appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty," said Das.

Girl students of Ravenshaw Junior College are usually accommodated in various girls' hostels of the varsity as the college does not have its own hostels.

At present, 40 girl students, including 20 first-year students of Ravenshaw Junior College, are staying in various hostels of the university on the campus.

On the other hand, Ravenshaw University authorities today denied that it was a case of ragging. In a news release issued by the university, the authorities claimed that internal inquiry conducted into the incident suggest that it was an issue of conflict arising out of adjustment between senior students and the junior student of Ravenshaw Junior College.

However, to collect more evidence, a joint inquiry committee with faculty of representatives from both Ravenshaw University and Ravenshaw Junior College would be constituted. The committee will talk to the girl student, her parents, roommates and others to verify the allegations.
