Bhubaneswar, March 16: Mahila police today arrested the husband and father-in-law of a woman for attacking and severely injuring her at Laxmi Sagar last night.
The woman alleged that her in-laws had been torturing her for several years as she protested against her husband’s extra-marital affairs.
The police identified the woman as 33-year-old Pratibha Nayak. She had to be rushed to Capital Hospital with head injury after her father-in-law attacked her with a hammer. There were five stitches on her head.
The Mahila police arrested her husband Tapan Das, 33, an employee of a two-wheeler showroom in the city, last night, while her father-in-law Purna Chandra Das, 65, was nabbed this morning.
The officials seized the blood-stained hammer from the spot.
The woman hails from Kendrapara district and owns a shop at Laxmi Sagar. She has been married to Tapan for 11 years and they have a seven-year-old daughter.
“My husband started having extra-marital affairs though we had a daughter. I was tortured so much that I had even tried to commit suicide in the past. But, they did not end their harassment and attempted to kill me over a silly incident last night,” she said.
She added that she had a quarrel with her father-in-law over the television remote control last night and the old man attacked her with a hammer.
“I would have been killed had I not ran out of the house,” said Pratibha.
She also alleged that her husband used to bring his women partners to their home despite her presence.
“Whenever I opposed him, he would beat me up,” she said.
“We have arrested the father-son duo following the complaint,” said a police officer.
The Mahila police forwarded Tapan and Purna Chandra to court. Later, they were sent to jail after their bail pleas were rejected.
