Bhubaneswar May 30: There seems to be no end to faction feuds within the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) despite supremo Naveen Patnaik’s warning to the party leaders to maintain discipline.

Nirupamma Mallick, wife of the Daspalla MLA Kashinath Mallick, today lodged an FIR against senior leader and Kandhamal MP Rudra Madhav Ray before the State Commission for Women accusing Ray of making derogatory remarks about their caste.

Chairperson of the commission Jyoti Panigrahi said she would investigate the matter.

On May 25, there was a public meeting in Dasapalla where supporters of the local MP and MLA had got involved in a brawl. The MLA had organised a meeting which was disrupted by Ray’s supporters. The MP’s supporters had warned the MLA not to hold any rally or public meeting in the city. However, Mallick and his supporters had gone ahead with their programme.

Later, Ray had allegedly abused Mallick and made remarks against his caste. Mallick had complained to the police and withdrew his complaint following intervention of senior leaders. Party sources said the tussle between the local MP and MLA would be further precipitated.

In another development, BJD spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Baishnab Charan Parida today came down heavily on party general secretary Narendra Swain for making a statement that he had got Rajya Sabha ticket owing to intervention of Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.

In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, on May 14, Swain said the party leadership had denied him the ticket to accommodate Parida, who was being backed by Mukherjee.

Parida said: “The allegations are totally baseless. By stating that Swain has put the entire leadership in an awkward situation before the public. Now, the BJP has made allegations that the Congress and the BJD are hand in gloves. Because of Swain, the party is in trouble.”

Stating that Swain enjoyed a good rapport with former minister Damador Rout, Parida said: “Swain has questioned the integrity of the party leader. His statement has made it clear that chief minister’s decision was guided by other factors.”

“The party leadership has already given a signal to all the leaders by suspending Debasis Nayak on Sunday. The party would not tolerate indiscipline,” he said.

In yet another development, Bari MLA Nayak, who was suspended from the party by Naveen on Sunday, said he would “continue to make efforts to save the image of the chief minister”.
