Cuttack, June 19: The SCB Medical College and Hospital finds itself embroiled in a controversy after a video, which purportedly tries to show how doctors at the emergency ward of the paediatric wing were responding to infant patients, went viral today.
The video was posted live by Ramakanta Bhoi, 40, of Basandara village under Biridi block of Jagatsingpur district, today on his Facebook wall after he found that no one was present to attend to his six-month-old daughter for over an hour. Bhoi had brought the kid to the hospital early this morning.
Controversy erupted when some junior doctors took umbrage to the live video on the social media and manhandled Bhoi, who was BJP candidate from Tirtol in the last Assembly polls.
It was early in the morning when Bhoi arrived at the hospital with his daughter, who was suffering from high fever. He had brought her to the hospital from his village as the fever showed no signs of remission.
"I reached the emergency ward of the paediatric wing at around 6am. I searched the rooms trying to spot a doctor but there was none. There was no one even in the consultant's room. After an hour elapsed, I thought of returning home. But then I decided to make known the state of affairs to the authorities. So I posted live the situation at the hospital around 7.30am," Bhoi told The Telegraph.
"Around 8pm, I saw two doctors (probably junior doctors) coming towards me. I thought they were coming to treat my infant daughter. But to my surprise they started manhandling me for the Facebook post and kept on abusing me in filthiest of language. Another junior doctor joined the two and threatened me with dire consequences," Bhoi said.
"They cited the recent assault on the attendants of a patient who tried to act smart," he said.
Finally, at 11.30am Bhoi had to take his daughter to the clinic of a paediatrician outside the hospital.
"There, my daughter's fever subsided with the medicine prescribed by the private doctor," said Bhoi, with humiliation writ large on his face.
Hospital superintendent Shyama Kanungo, however, initially refused to react to the incident as it was being looked into.
"I have asked for a report from the professor in-charge of the paediatric wing. A clear picture will emerge only after receiving the report," Kanungo told The Telegraph.
"But preliminary inquiries reveal that the doctor on duty had attended to an infant patient around 6.45am and then went to the toilet," the superintendent said.
Reacting to the plight of his fellow party leader, former minister and BJP state vice-president Samir Dey said: "At SCB Medical College Hospital dadagiri (high-handedness) of junior doctors seem to have become a routine affair."
He said: "Ramakanta Bhoi was fortunate as the police from the outpost in the hospital intervened and took him away to safety".
On May 29, attendants of a patient at the orthopaedic department were assaulted brutally by junior doctors. Police had registered a case and is on the lookout for 10 junior doctors in connection with the case.
