Chandigarh, March 8: Punjab police on Friday said they might question Vijender Singh about possible links with alleged drug baron Anoop Singh Kahlon even though the Olympian boxer denied any involvement.
The police had yesterday seized 26kg heroin and other drugs worth Rs 130 crore from Kahlon’s home at Zirakpur on the outskirts of Chandigarh.
“At present, we have not found any direct link between Vijender and Kahlon. But we are investigating how a car registered in the name of Vijender’s wife Archana was found near Kahlon’s house,” said M.F. Farooqui, deputy inspector-general (DIG), Ludhiana range, in Fatehgarh Saheb today.
Kahlon, a non-resident Indian who lives in Canada, was arrested during the weekend at a checkpoint with 600gm heroin. After interrogation, the police raided his flat. Of the seized drugs, about 10kg was found in a car — not the one belonging to Anjali — parked outside the apartment.
A senior police officer said: “Vijender’s friend and national boxer Ram Singh is acquainted with Kahlon. He is being questioned. If required, we will also call Vijender and take his statement, as he has made certain disclosures.”
Another police officer said Kahlon had named both Vijender and Ram during interrogation as his “clients” to whom he used to supply heroin. Ram is a Punjab police constable. He, too, has denied any involvement with Kahlon.
Vijender, who is a deputy superintendent of police in Haryana, also expressed bewilderment at the development. He said: “I have met Kahlon a few times. I meet a lot of people. I can’t remember all of them. I am at a loss of words over my so-called involvement.” He added that he had no idea how his wife’s car, which had been parked near Netaji Institute of Sports in Patiala, found its way to Zirakpur.
DIG Farooqui said the car found near Kahlon’s house had its keys inside it.
Vijender won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics becoming the first Indian pugilist to win a medal at the highest sports meet. He also won a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games.
