Balasore, Sept. 4: A “dead” woman walked into a local court in Baripada yesterday only to inform that she is alive.

Lily Nayak, 25, of Dhadasahi within the Moroda police station limits, was reported dead two years ago. But, she, along with an infant boy in her lap, appeared in the court of additional sessions judge, where her husband and brother were being tried for “murdering her”.

According to police records, Lily was murdered, and Suliapada police arrested her husband Sukadev Kayak, 30, and brother Subash Singh, 29, of Chandabila village following investigations.

The accused duo had been lodged in judicial custody for a few days, and now, they are out on bail. They were to appear before the court on Wednesday.

Many local residents congregated to see Lily. The court couldn’t record her statement. However, she was sent to a local short-stay home under the court’s direction.

Lily had been missing since the evening on May 11, 2012 after she went out to answer nature’s call.

Her husband had reported the matter to the police on May 18. After the police carried out a search operation on May 23, a decomposed body of an unknown woman was found in a well at Dhadasahi village.

Gramarakkhi Dasarath Hembram had informed the police that the body belonged to Lily following which the police initiated action.

The police arrested Sukadev and Subash and produced them in court slapping sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The cops then proved that Sukadev had killed Lily due to marital discord and the body was thrown into the well with the help of her brother.

Questions are now being raised about the identity of the woman, whose body the police had recovered from the well.

Sources said Lily told her family members that one Sajani Dhal of Dumburi had kidnapped her and taken to Calcutta.

Sub-divisional police officer Dhiren Chandra Nanda said: “The case would be re-investigated after Lily’s statement. We have to find out whose body was found then, and also we would verify if the woman, Lily, is indeed the missing wife of Sukadev.”

He said Sukadev confessed that he had killed his wife by strangulating her as he had suspected her of having extramarital relations. “The video footage of his statement is available with us. Those evidences would be scrutinised again,” he said.
