Cuttack: Police have nabbed criminal Manas Kumar Das, 30, a resident of Baseli Sahi at Bidyadharpur, for his involvement in a series of crimes after release from jail on bail.

The police on Tuesday arrested Das in connection with allegedly molesting a woman, attempting to kill her and running a gambling racket on the Mahanadi riverbed near Nehrupalli.

Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said: "Das, who is an associate of Usmal Ali Khab alias Tito (known for running a notorious gang from Kendrapara), is an extortionist and fixes tenders at gunpoint."

"He has also been booked for his involvement in offences and not mending his criminal behaviour even after coming out of jail on conditional bail," Singh said.

As a member of the Tito gang, Das had gained notoriety for involvement in bombings and attempt to murder cases in Chauliaganj police limits.

The police said there were 16 criminal cases registered against him at Chauliaganj police station and one each at Jagatpur, Malgodown and Madhupatana police stations.

"Recently, he came out of Ali Pingal Jail in Jagatsinghpur district and committed crime at Bidyadharpur," Singh said.
