Bhubaneswar, May 16: Memories from childhood, visions and vivid pictures of creativity came alive on canvas at the annual art exhibition by students of the painting department of B.K. College of Fine Arts and Craft.

Titled Drawings, the exhibition that was held at Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi attracted many visitors.

Aesthetic creations in pencil, charcoal, acrylic, oil and mixed media, by the young artists at the exhibition touched various aspects of life and reflections. A mixed media abstract creation by Santanu Meher, titled Pain, was an illustration of the parasitic evils of the society. The artist puts across his idea through the picture of a human arm attacked by a cloud of mosquitoes sucking blood. Radhananda Yadav’s work Palayen, though aesthetically plainer, holds a strong theme. Named aptly, the oil painting shows an overloaded bullock cart where a group of villagers seems to be leaving their motherland.

Some abstract paintings use a wild riot of colours, supported by thoughtful imagination. Prabhudayal Tirki’s untitled piece shows profile of a man with a bizarre expression and paint sprayed all over his body. Similarly, a simpler and precise drawing with ink on paper, by Deepa Das, was an impressive piece of art. The painter created a butterfly, yet to completely metamorphose. While the creature had attractive wings, the main physical form, appearing like a lady, is yet bound by threads of the cocoon. Among other interesting works, were those by Alina Biswal, Amiya Behera, Karmu Majhi, Jharna Mishra and so on. Visitors, who made rounds of the three-day exhibition, appreciated efforts of the young artists.

“The paintings and drawings displayed here are beautiful. It is tough to believe that such young artists, still pursuing their course at the college, could come up with such brilliant ideas,” said Prerana Ghadei, a visitor.

“Some sketches and drawings were simply outstanding. I really liked the creation of Satyajit Haldar in Living Fossil that shows a strange animal which is a blend of different reptiles,” said Diptimayi Mishra, an art lover.

The annual art exhibition that concluded on Sunday included works of painting by students of second-year to fourth-year. “A magazine of the painting department, that shares name of the exhibition, has also been reinstated on the occasion since its publishing had been stopped years ago,” said artist Subrat Mallick, head of department of painting, B.K. College.
