Cuttack: Police on Saturday night busted a fake zarda manufacturing unit at Bisrampur and arrested one person in this connection.
Pravat Kumar Sahu, 52, was manufacturing fake zarda of the popular Gopal brand.
The police had received a complaint about trademark violation and fake zarda production at Sahu's house within Badambadi police limits. Kailash Singh Chauhan, a representative from Gopal Zarda's Delhi office, had lodged the complaint, the police said. A squad of Badambadi police raided Sahu's house at Bisramnagar in Das Sahi on Saturday.
"We seized 86 packets Gopal 60 zarda, 15 cartons carrying the brand's name, a pouch packing machine and a jar packing machine," Badambadi police station officer-in-charge Biranchi Narayan Pati said.
"Large quantities of raw materials used to prepare spurious zarda were also seized," Pati said. Sahu was later arrested and booked under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and different sections of the Trade Marks Act.
The police said Sahu prepared the zarda with low quality tobacco products and used different chemicals to add scent and pushed them into the market using fake labels.
