Bhubaneswar, May 29: The Congress today alleged that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, which completed two years in office, had failed on all fronts.

"It has been a big failure," said All-India Women Congress president Sobha Ojha at a news conference here today.

"People have got disillusioned with the Modi government," said Ojha listing the "failures" of the government.

Describing Modi as "anti-farmer", the Ojha said food production of the country had declined from 265 lakh metric tonnes in 2013-14 to 253 lakh metric tonne in 2015-16.

The BJP-led government had been apathetic to mitigate the woes of the farmers, who have been affected by natural calamities such as unseasonal rain last year and severe drought this year, she said, adding that 2,996 farmers had committed suicides in 2015.

Ojha said Modi had promised to provide employment to two crore youths every year. But, 20,000 jobs were cut during October-December in 2015 in eight central PSUs.

The Congress leader also criticised the Modi government for the "unprecedented" price rise of essential commodities, slowdown in the industrial sector and cut in allocation on education and various developmental schemes.

Instead of spending on the developmental projects, Modi is spending crores on publicity, she said.

On the other hand, BJP general secretary in charge of Odisha Arun Singh said the country's GDP had grown from 4 per cent during the UPA regime to 7.6 per cent during the last two years.

Singh claimed that the foreign currency reserve had increased from 24 million dollars during the UPA regime to 40 million dollars.

On the proposed visit of the Prime Minister to Odisha on June 2, the BJP leader said: "Modi is always concerned for Odisha. He is coming to the state with the message of development. His next visit to Balasore is his third to the state within a year."

Singh said the misdeeds and corruption of the BJD in the state had reached its nadir and the people were disgusted with its misrule. The BJP had emerged as the only alternative in the state, as evident from the growing organisational base of the party.

The BJD, on the other hand, said both the Congress and BJP failed to deliver the goods and the people had lost confidence in both the parties.

"People have reposed faith on the BJD for its clean and effective governance," said BJD spokesman Samir Dash.
