Bhubaneswar, Nov. 24: The Congress and the Left parties in the state will support the nationwide protest scheduled on Monday against note ban.

Pradesh Congress Committee president Prasad Harichandan today told the reporters that the party would organise Jan Akrosh (public anger) rallies in all the 30 districts and block headquarters across the state.

He, however, clarified that the party would not observe strike as people were already facing hardships because of demonetisation for nearly two weeks. "We will stage demonstrations and protest meetings over the issue," he said.

While the Left is yet to chalk out their strategies, their leaders said they would support a joint protest demonstration in front of the Reserve Bank headquarters in Bhubaneswar.

"Five left parties - CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Forward Bloc and Socialist Unity Centre of India - are scheduled to meet tomorrow to decide their course of action," CPI state secretary Dibakar Nayak told The Telegraph.

"We will also co-ordinate with other parties regarding protests over the demonetisation issue," said Nayak.

Senior CPI(M) leader Janardan Pati said: "We want to lodge our protest against this anti-people move, but we don't want to cause any further public inconvenience."

Earlier, the Congress had called a 12-hour strike across the state in protest against construction of barrages over the Mahanadi in Chhatigarh ignoring the state's interest.

All the trade unions affiliated to all the non-BJP parties also went on a nationwide strike on September 2 in protest against the central government's "faulty economic policies".

Criticising the Narendra Modi government for its decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, Congress leader Harichandan said: "The public are facing immense hardships in their day-to-day to life. Even people in the tribal and rural pockets have been forced to buy essential commodities through barter. Those who have wedding in their families are in a state of confusion," he said citing instances.

"When the Modi government waived loans of big business houses, it has not done so for the common men, particularly the farmers, who were forced to commit suicide," rued the Congress leader.

In the state, around 21 lakh poor farmers are waiting for the crop insurance to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore since last year," he said. "Disgusted with the demonetisation move, people have already taken to the streets in New Delhi and other states," he said.

"Modi has declared an economic emergency in the country. Ninety nine per cent people, who have put their hard-earned income in the banks, are not being able to withdraw," said CPI(M) leader Pati.
