Bhubaneswar, July 10: The department of higher education today declared the first selection list for all the degree colleges in the state. Although the department had put up links for the merit list, cut-off marks and selection status on its official website, none of them worked, leaving both students and college authorities tense till the evening.

“There were technical glitches because so many applicants were trying to open the site simultaneously. The server has a limited capacity,” said a senior official managing the Student Academic Management System.

Besides, the ongoing form fill-up for junior colleges is also on, leading to additional load on the server, said the official. A total of 1.78 lakh students across the state had applied for 1.41 lakh degree seats. BJB Autonomous College, the most sought after college in the state, registered an increase of about 20 per cent in the cut-offs as compared to last year. The cut-off for physical science had gone up to 86.4 per cent from 69.8 per cent last year. For biological science, the cut-off jumped from 66 per cent to 83.8 per cent. In arts, the cut-off went up from 54.17 per cent to 63.5 per cent and in commerce, it went up to 80.8 from 68.5 last year. “This indicates that the standard of students has risen. Also, many more students seem to be taking general courses,” said principal of BJB college Suresh Pattnaik. Cut-offs at Ramadevi Women’s College were 66 per cent for arts, 70.5 per cent for commerce, 81.83 per cent for physical science, 77.2 per cent for biological science and 63.67 per cent for self-financing courses.

At the College Of Basic Science and Humanities, the cut-off for physical science was 81.67 per cent, 77.4 per cent for biological science and 63.5 per cent for self-financing courses. Maharshi College had a cut-off of 51.63 per cent for arts, 69.5 per cent for commerce, 76 per cent for physical science and 67.4 per cent for biological science.

Kamala Nehru College had a cut-off of 47.33 per cent for arts, 35 per cent for commerce, 66.5 per cent for biological science and 66.67 per cent for physical science. At 54 per cent, 45.5 per cent and 35 per cent for arts, Rajdhani College, City Women’s College and Satya Sai College had the lowest cut-offs in the city. There were 2.44 lakh applications for arts and 46,351 applications for commerce, 96,108 applications for the physical science stream while the chemistry-botany-zoology (biological science) stream received 42,758 applications.

The self-financing stream received only 4,282 applications. The department of higher education has decided not to conduct second selection this time. Admission will happen in four stages — first selection admission, SC/ST extension admission, spot selection admission and admission after supplementary or instant examination. Classes for degree students will start on August 1.
