Paradip, June 10: Police have rescued a security guard, who was allegedly confined and subjected to physical torture in a toilet for over 48 hours by seniors colleagues at the Paradip project site.

The victim reportedly underwent agonising experience as his superiors had suspected his involvement in a theft case. The victim, Subrat Mahalik, 28, was accused of committing theft while doing night duty at the project site.

Two officials of the private security agency beat him up and confined him in a toilet. Mahalik was beaten up by iron rod and forced to do sit-ups under scorching sun. Later, the duo dealt blow on his body by a hot iron rod.

The security personnel had also snatched away his money and mobile phone during the sequence of the third degree treatment, according to the complaint.

“We rescued the victim from the project site. Multiple injury marks were found on various parts of his body. There was also sign of burn injury. He was medically examined,” said inspector of Abhayachandrapur police station Aniruddha Routray.

The police have found veracity in the charge levelled by the complainant, who hails from Tarasa village of Kendrapara. On the basis of material and circumstantial evidence, we have registered a case against security officers — Sanjay Mahapatra and Surajit Singh — under Section 394 of the Indian Penal Code.

However, both the accused persons are absconding.

In another development, in connection with June 8-fire mishap that led to the death of a labourer at the under-construction captive power plant, a multi-disciplinary committee of Indian Oil Company has begun an investigation into the fire safety measures at the Paradip oil refinery project. The mishap had occurred at the under-construction captive power plant, the work of which is being carried out by the state-run Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited.
