Cuttack/Berhampur, April 25: Tension prevailed on Ravenshaw University campus following a clash between two student groups today.
At least two BBA students were injured in the clash that occurred minutes after the completion of the undergraduate examination around 10.15am.
Varsity officials said that the clash occurred between day scholar students and another group of students said to be the boarders of East Hostel.
A scuffle between both the groups started over minor argument in the parking stand.
Although both the groups had retreated after senior varsity officials intervened, the situation went out of control after the students’ groups returned later in the afternoon.
Later, both the groups were engaged in brickbatting that lasted for over five minutes and the boarders of East Hostel injured two first-year BBA students in the alleged attack.
Both the students have suffered severe head injuries and have been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. When contacted, both the students refused to speak anything about the incident.
“So far we have not received any written complaints from either of the groups over the incident. However, we had called representatives from either side in the evening for a discussion so as to restore peace on the campus keeping in view the ongoing examinations,” said acting vice-chancellor P.K. Mohapatra.
Mohapatra said that guardians of the students have also been called for a meeting tomorrow and senior officials of the city police have been asked to take appropriate measures to prevent any untoward incident.
In another incident, senior students of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur allegedly ragged a fourth semester student at hostel No. 1 yesterday.
“Four seniors called me for a meeting at the hostel. When I met them, they slapped me and asked me to kneel down. Despite kneeling down, I was slapped again,” said Ashutosh, who looked visibly and mentally upset.
Ashutosh, son of an associate professor at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), left for Bhubaneswar after the alleged ragging incident.
Later, he returned to Berhampur with his parents. He informed the Baidyanathpur police about the incident at late last night. “We have referred the matter to the anti-ragging committee of the medical college and the issue has been amicably settled. The seniors have agreed not to harass the student any more and there would be no further proceedings against the students,” said Ajaya Mishra, inspector in charge Baidyanathpur police station.
However, principal of the medical college A.K. Dandapat denied allegations of ragging inside the college. “This was mere wrangling between two student groups which has been termed as ragging,” he said.
Revenue divisional commissioner (southern division) Bikash Chandra Mohapatra, who is also the chairman of the management committee of the medical college, said that he was not clear about the alleged ragging incident, thus he has not yet initiated any action.
“If there is any ragging, the anti-ragging committee of the medical college will adjudicate,” said Mohapatra.
