NEST results

Bhubaneswar: C Rahul from Andhra Pradesh topped the National Entrance Screening Test (Nest) for admission into the National Institute of Science Education and Research (Niser), the results of which were announced on Friday.  The state's Ashutosh Samal and Amartya Prusty secured 19th and 20th position respectively. Nearly 54,500 students appeared the exam, out of whom, 99 have been selected for the first round of counselling scheduled on July 12. There are 132 seats for 2016 batch, including reserved seats for SC/ST/OBC/PD candidates and two seats for candidates from Jammu & Kashmir according to government norms. 

Man killed

Bhubaneswar: An old man was hacked to death at Kharajuri village in Muribahal block of Balangir district on Friday. According to sources, Anadi Banchhor attacked the old man, identified as Kangalu Banchhor, with a sharp weapon. The cops have begun a probe into the matter and are looking for Anadi, who is absconding, said sources.

Shot dead

Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped Thokara village under Balimi police station in Dhenkanal after a village youth was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Sanjeev Majhi. Though the exact reason behind the murder is yet to be known, police suspect past enmity.

Dhal brothers

Bhubaneswar: Chauliaganj police on Friday filed charge sheet against gangster brothers Sushil and Sushant Dhal Samant and 28 of their associates. Charges of tender fixing and extortion have been levelled against the criminal siblings. The charge sheet has been submitted in the Cuttack sub-divisional judicial magistrate’s court. 

Dog bite

Bhubaneswar: Three tourists got injured after being bitten by a dog at Nandankanan on Friday afternoon. The injured have been admitted to Capital Hospital. Sources in the zoo said that the dog recently went rabid. 

Houses gutted

Bhubaneswar: Four houses were gutted following a fire that broke out at Harirajpur in Khurda district on Thursday night. The incident occurred at Brahmin Sahi of the village and properties worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes.

Bhubaneswar: Ten persons were held for a group clash in Khurda.

Foreign vessel

Bhadrak: A foreign vessel and its crew have come under the scanner of the security agencies after they allegedly breached the Indian law. The crewmembers were allegedly using a satellite phone, while any form of communication is prohibited in the sea under the Indian territory. A Coast Guard patrolling squad intercepted the coal-laden vessel in the mid-sea. The Coast Guard personnel have handed over the crews to Bhadrak police for further investigation. Job fraud

Bhubaneswar: Job aspirants filed a fraud complaint against a firm at Town police station in Jeypore of Koraput district on Friday. In the name of assuring jobs at Southern Electricity Supply Company of Odisha Limited (Southco), the company officials allegedly defrauded nearly 300 boys and girls. The Southco job aspirants alleged that the officials of the fictitious company made them work for about six months without any remuneration whatsoever

Ponzi auction

Bhubaneswar: Three plots of Astha International, a sham deposit collection company, were successfully auctioned through an e-auction on Friday. According to government official sources, the plots of Astha under Chilika Tehsil were 
sold at a price of Rs 11.94 lakh.
