CBI remand

Bhubaneswar: The CBI on Monday took Rose Valley chief Goutam Kundu on a nine-day remand. The CBI produced Kundu before a special chief judicial magistrate’s court and got the permission to take him into remand for interrogation on the multi-crore money-laundering scam. He was arrested in March 2015.  

Probe ordered

Nabarangpur: District collector Rashmita Panda on Monday ordered an investigation for the death of a 15-day-old baby girl after being branded with a hot iron rod in the name of treatment at Gorama village in Jharigaon block on Sunday night. The police arrested a witch doctor, Sukumati, for branding the baby, acting on a complaint lodged by the infant’s father. 

Ten arrested

Bhubaneswar: The economic offences wing (EOW) arrested ten persons for illegal excavation and transportation of black granite and laterite stones from Khurda, Puri, Jajpur and Cuttack districts. The arrested persons are Akhil Mohan Sahoo, 25, Narayan Routray, 32, Goutam Chand, 28, Gouranga Rout, 36, Pratap Keshari Behera, 32, Jeevan Das, 25, Biswaranjan Panda, 30, Sadananda Behera, 32, Gyanaranjan Mishra, 31 and Parsuram Chand, 22. The EOW has also seized seven vehicles used in the transportation of the stones.

Two held

Bhadrak: Police arrested two persons for allegedly murdering a 20-year-old brick kiln worker here. The deceased, Bishnu Rout, a native of Nuapada district, was found dead at Jasatikiri village in Nereda gram panchayat on Monday morning. A police source said that a relative of the deceased is one of the suspects in the murder.

Tribal fair

Bhubaneswar: The annual Adivasi Mela will begin at the Adivasi Ground from Tuesday. An initiative of the SC/ST development department, this year’s fest will be inaugurated by chief minister Naveen Patnaik. The fair serves as a mini tribal museum to enlighten people about various tribes in the state.
