Cuttack, Sept. 2: The civic body formed a committee for preparing a blueprint for the second deer park project that had been proposed six years ago.

The panel, led by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation's deputy commissioner along with other officials, has been formed to chalk out a master plan on the design and other facilities of the park.

The park is expected to come up at Uttamapur near Subhadrapur on the city outskirts, around 8km from the Link Road. The committee was formed after a team of the Central Zoo Authority of India inspected the site for the park on August 17.

Official sources said the zoo authority had asked the municipal corporation to submit the detail project report on the park within 60 days.

The committee is expected to play a crucial role in giving a push to the proposed project that has so far remained on paper.

"Once the central zoo authority approves the detail project report, including the design and other formalities, the work on the park will start within a couple of months," said local councillor of ward No. 56 Sanjay Baral.

The civic body had earlier identified two acres for the park, but now the authority team asked it to construct the park on 20 acres.

Baral said the proposed 20-acre site belonged to the district administration, and the process of getting the permit for land possession had started.

A civic body official said the land demarcation was expected to start shortly with necessary technical support from the district administration.

The second deer park project had been mooted in 2010 to resolve overcrowding of animals in the existing deer park at Madhusudan Nagar.

The Madhusudan Nagar park was set up in 1981 on 2.5 acres with five animals. Now, the park has 173 deer. This has created problems for the movement of animals in the park.

The civic body had identified a few sites, including one at Bhadimula, for the project. The site was not found suitable as it was prone to floods because of its location along the Mahanadi bank.

"The civic body has finally taken measures to address the park's problems, including proper sitting arrangements and preventing accumulation of rainwater," said Kusum Dash, a visitor.
