Balangir, May 29: Bai nacha and suggestive gyrations that form an integral part of the procession during the Sitalsasthi festival here will this time invite trouble for the organisers.
To make the festival enjoyable for all, the district administration has decided not to allow any kind of obscenity during the Sital sasthi processions that began since Tuesday.
Balangir police have instructed all the Puja committees not to allow any obscenity during the procession. Balangir sub-collector Brajabandhu Bhola said display of obscenity in public would not be allowed during the festival.
“No public display of obscenity will be allowed during the procession this year. We will take stringent action against anyone found to be encouraging nudity during the procession,” Bhola said.
The Bai nacha and record dance groups from neighbouring states form an integral part of the procession every year. At least 50 dance groups, both bai nacha and record dances, as well as 150 artistes take part in the three-day festival festival.
But, all and sundry cannot enjoy the procession of the Lord Shiv and Parvati due to the vulgar dances of bai nacha and suggestive gyrations by the record dance artistes. And the eunuchs have added more obscenity by their acts and performances during the festival.
“There is a public demand to stop obscenity during the festival to make it a family affair. Several persons have requested to stop it,” the sub-collector said.
Yesterday, the sub-collector called a meeting of the Puja committee members and asked them to take initiative to stop the obscene acts during the festival. Senior police officials, including Balangir additional superintendent of police Sunil Joshi, attended the meeting held at town police station.
The return procession of Lord Shiv and Parvati would begin from early Thursday morning and continue till afternoon in which the procession of four major Puja committees would take part. There are eight Puja committees in the town.
In 2012, the police had to act on the organisers and artistes who performed and encouraged obscene acts during the procession. The police had even arrested four artistes for performing dance with explicit obscene material during the return procession of the deities. The cops had also registered cases against president and secretary of the Abasara Binodana Sahiyta Samiti Sitalsasthi Committee for encouraging obscene acts during the festival.
