Bhubaneswar, Feb. 16: Emotions and articulations of women have always caught the attention of art lovers. Sasmita Barik has captured the subject at her solo exhibition Shringara.
The six-day exhibition is underway at the Odisha Modern Art Gallery.
Barik, a graduate of the traditional painting department at B.K. College of Art and Crafts, has depicted the expressions of a woman in altering situations. These expressions reflected by her central character in each painting correspond to three of the nine bhavas or expressions known as Navarasa.
'I have chosen three forms of expressions such as shringara or beauty to attract her lover, karuna that symbolises grief and compassion, and shanta that depicts serenity and peace,' said the artist.
Using the traditional set-up in her paintings in terms of attire and make up, Sasmita has defined the character in an ancient style. In shringara, the woman is seen decked up in jewellery and flowers, passionately showering love. During the angst of separation, she is seen grieving.
The expressions have been portrayed excellently and they reflect the frame of mind the character is set in. While the backdrop shades are not too bright or unusual, the women in each paintings are seen mostly in white.
Barik has held on to the elements of pure traditional art when it comes to shapes and forms. The painter is yet to explore the novelty of traditional art when presented on canvas. However, the fact that she is among a few female artists who are pursuing their passion for art is commendable.
Visitors appreciated Barik's works. 'The theme is interesting as is the artist's choice of situations. She has tried to look into the feelings of a woman,' said Bibhu Naik, an art enthusiast. The exhibition will conclude today.
