Bhubaneswar, Nov. 21: Suvendu Kumar Mishra, a 23-year-old army officer from Odisha, who had fought many anti-terrorist operations, lost his life in the train accident in Kanpur yesterday.

He was among the 130 people killed when the Indore-Patna Express derailed at Pukhrayan in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, yesterday morning. Mishra was a captain in the army and a native of Sarankul in Nayagarh district. His family lives in Bhubaneswar.

He joined the army in 2014 after graduating from the National Defence Academy. Mishra was a student of Sainik School in Dehradun.

His uncle Sisir Kumar Mohapatra said that Suvendu was going to Lucknow to get his dislocated right shoulder fixed.

"He sustained the injury during training at an army academy in Indore. He was referred to the Command Hospital in Lucknow. He had planned to board another train from Kanpur to reach the hospital, but died before reaching the destination," said Sisir.

Though the accident occurred at 3.30am, Sisir said that they were informed about his death at 9.30am by the railway officials. "I immediately informed my younger brother in Delhi who rushed to Kanpur and found his body at a hospital. Though my nephew had wished to donate his organs after his death, his last wish could not be fulfilled due to delay in the rescue operation," said Sisir.

Family members said that Suvendu was promoted to the rank of captain at a very young age because of his good work in anti-terrorism operations. Suvendu's father Himanshu Sekhar Mishra, a senior general manager in a steel company, and mother Binati Mishra, live in Angul.

"He was very passionate about serving his country and that was the reason he joined the army. It is unfortunate that he could not serve long. His seniors have called us and promised all help," said Suvendu's mother.

Family members said that his body would be flown to Bhubaneswar. It is expected to reach here this evening and the body would be cremated at the Satya Nagar crematorium here.
