Bhubaneswar, Dec. 29: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, has started indoor facilities for patients on its Sijua campus on the city outskirts on an experimental basis.

An official of the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, said that in the first phase, they started a 30-bed indoor facility on Saturday on a trial basis. Within 10 days, this will expand to 50 beds.

“The indoor facility for cancer patients was already there. But, we have started the facilities for other patients from last week. We have admitted a few patients as well. However, we have not admitted any seriously-ill patients as the work is in an experimental stage now,” said Ashok Mohapatra, director of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

Sources said the facilities in gynaecology and general medicine departments had been started while a special clinic for eye would start next week. Diagnostic facilities, such as CT scan, ultrasound and bronchoscopy, have been completed but it will still take a few more days for everything to be ready.

Mohapatra said that some diagnostic facilities had started operating from last week, while work for other facilities was on. “The indoor unit will run full-fledged from next month. The capacity of the indoor unit will be extended to 300 in the near future,” he said.

Once the doctors join in their duties on December 31, the indoor facility will start operating properly.

The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, had started its out patient departments (OPDs) from June 4 this year. About 40,000 patients have already been treated in the out patient departments of the hospital.

It has already started nine specialty clinics in July this year. The hospital is among a few medical institutions in the country to have a specialty sleep clinic. At present, 15 specialty clinics are functioning in the hospital. The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, plans to have 39 super specialty clinics in the near future.

Besides, the hospital has started registering cancer patients to make a database to identify and diagnose them properly. The officials said that they were registering patients who had similar cancer cases among their family members and genetic origin. In these cases, the doctors would be able to diagnose the diseases properly.

Doctors said breast and colon cancers were high-risk diseases of hereditary origin.

The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, is located on a 100-acre campus at Sijua.
