Cuttack, Nov. 6: Several people have expressed interest to adopt the twin baby girls who were rescued from Cuttack railway station last evening and are undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital here.
District administration officials said two to three non-government organisations had already approached them to adopt the babies. However, a decision about their rehabilitation would be taken only after the condition of the babies improves, said district collector Girish S.N. The twins are underweight and have been kept under observation.
The babies, who are about four to five days old, were found abandoned inside a carton under a baggage trolley on platform No.1 of the railway station by a group of passengers. On being informed, the government railway police and Childline rushed to the spot and took the babies to the hospital. It is suspected that their parents abandoned them.
Hospital officials said both babies would undergo medical tests to ascertain their condition. However, at present their condition was stable.
Child welfare committee member Rini Mohanty said: “Childline has already provided a caretaker to look after the babies at the hospital. After their treatment gets over, Childline would bring the babies to us and a decision regarding their rehabilitation would be taken.”
Mohanty said this was the second instance within a week in which a female child has been abandoned. On November 4, a newborn girl was rescued by a 60-year-old woman from near Kandarpur. The child was then rehabilitated at Basundhara, a non-governmental organisation here.
GRP officials said efforts were on to trace the twins’ parents and the hospital where they were delivered. “We are investigating who had abandoned the newborns at the platform. We are interrogating several people,” said GRP inspector-in-charge Trinath Mishra.
