Bhubaneswar, Aug. 22: A 22-year-old engineering student died last night after he fell off the roof of a three-storey building in an apartment complex in Shree Vihar apparently under the influence of an adhesive.

Police said the youth Mrutunjay Prasad, who hailed from Rourkela and was studying at a private engineering college in Chandrasekharpur, fell off the roof of the apartment after inhaling fumes of an adhesive.

The cops found him clutching a sachet of the adhesive. He had another packet of the glue in his trouser pocket. Chandrasekharpur police believe he was addicted to inhaling the adhesive. His friends corroborated it.

Prasad’s friend and roommate Swaraj Babu, who hails from Baragarh district, said that around 11.30 last night when they were about to take dinner, a security guard informed them that one of their friends had fallen off the roof.

“When we rushed to the ground floor, we found a bloodied Prasad lying face down. We called an ambulance from a nearby hospital, but he had died by then,” said Babu.

Prasad was a third-year student of automobile engineering in the private college and he had come to stay with his friend two months ago. Six students, including the deceased, were staying in a flat in the fifth block of a 6th Avenue apartment complex at Shree Vihar. Of the six, five were students of the same college as the deceased.

The cops informed the deceased’s parents, who live in Rourkela, about the incident. Prasad’s father D.K. Prasad hails from Jharkhand and works at the Rourkela Steel Plant.

Inspector in charge of Chandrasekharpur police station R.N. Satpathy said it was clear that Prasad had fallen from the roof under the influence of the addictive. “We found out from his friends that he was an addict. We have registered a case of unnatural death,” he said.
