Guwahati: Services of Ola and Uber were disrupted on the first day of the 72-hour strike called by the All Assam Cab Operators' Union (AACOU) here from Monday.
The union has called the strike demanding an increase in incentives, extra bonus for more than eight hours of duty, to freeze enrolment of new vehicles, decrease the commission of the app-hailing operators to 10 per cent, ensure a minimum fare of Rs 100 and resume all suspended accounts of cab-owners along with a welfare scheme for cab drivers.
The All India Road Transport Workers Federation has extended its support to the strike.
AACOU president Ismail Ali said the union, along with the other like-minded organisations, would submit a memorandum to Dispur on Wednesday.
Though Ismail claimed the strike was peaceful, Uber, in a statement this evening, said, "We regret the disruption caused to our riders and driver community in Guwahati by a small group of individuals who are resorting to violence and vandalism."
On the other hand, refuting the allegation, Ali said, "The allegation is baseless. Monday's protest was very peaceful. In Chandmari, a driver who was trying to ply his cab was stopped by our members and there was some exchange of words and nothing more."
Chandmari police station officer-in-charge Biren Chandra Deka said, "Two clashes between cab drivers were reported, one in Silpukhuri and one in Chandmari. But both of them were not so serious and were settled easily."
