Varsity gets author's diaries

The family members of Padmanath Gohain Baruah, the first president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, and Tezpur Sahitya Sabha handed over the diaries of the litterateur for digitalisation and preservation to Tezpur University.

Tezpur, June 8: The family members of Padmanath Gohain Baruah, the first president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, and Tezpur Sahitya Sabha handed over the diaries of the litterateur for digitalisation and preservation to Tezpur University.

The diaries were handed over yesterday when the Assamese Study Centre of the university celebrated its fifth foundation day.

The family members of Gohain Baruah had earlier handed over the diaries of the years 1900, 1903, 1905, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1925, 1931, 1935, 1939, 1940 and 1941, to Tezpur Sahitya Sabha.

On behalf of the university, pro vice-chancellor Manabendra Bhuyan and Ranjit Kumar Deva Goswami, the chairman of the Assamese Study Centre, received the materials. Goswami said the centre had got a valuable property. "In the next four to five months, these diaries will be the property of the world community. We will make the diaries accessible after digitalising them," he said.

Goswami said since its inception, the centre had been working towards preservation and digitalisation of valuable work. He added that the university would initiate the preservation of the creations and books of other litterateurs of the state.
