Guwahati, April 17: Unseeded home lad Rupam Gogoi today scored a convincing win over eighth seed Vishal Passi of Maharashtra at the North East Tennis Foundation courts on the inaugural day of the OIL-AITA Super Series (Ranking) Tennis Championship that got under way today.
Rupam outclassed Vishal 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the under-14 boys? event. The other seeded players on the boys? courts sailed into the second round.
The girls? under-14 singles saw fourth seed Arundhati Basu of West Bengal upset by statemate Amrita Mukherjee in straight sets. Amrita won 6-4, 6-4.
The first and second seeds in the girls? draw ? Gopika Kapoor and Sweta C. Rana of Delhi ? got by in the first round.
Home girls Pamir Gogoi and Nishigandha Misra booked second round berths for themselves while Anangsha Alomyan went down to Vaniya Dangwal 6-1, 6-0. While Pamir blanked out Nrityanjal Chakma 6-0, 6-0, Nishigandha struggled back from a set down to beat Sarvya Reddy 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Surya Tejaswani had to struggle against K. Sneha Reddy for a 6-7 (7-3), 6-2, 6-4 win to book a berth in the second round.
It was a mixed day for the Assam boys with several of them being shown the door in the first round itself.
Apart from Rupam, the other Assam lads who made it to the second round today are Abhinansu Borthakur, Angshuman Deka, Sudhant S. Mohanty and Sidhant Deka.
The boys? ties were mostly lacklustre affairs with no one running beyond 18 games a match. The contests between Sidhant and Uday Shankar Baruah, where the former won 6-2, 6-4 and between S. Sidharth and Rupjyoti Basu-matary, where Sidharth won 6-2, 6-3, proved exciting affairs.
Altogether 46 players from across the country are taking part in the meet that ends on April 21. The tournament, sponsored by Oil India Ltd, is one of the major AITA ranking meets organised by the All Assam Tennis Association at the NETF complex here.
The meet will also include doubles draws.
