Itanagar, Oct. 4: Arunachal Pradesh BJP president Tai Tagak today questioned the state government's ability to function in the face of multiple litigations.
Chief minister Nabam Tuki's government has come under pressure in recent months from Gauhati High Court, which had ordered a CBI probe against chief minister Nabam Tuki for allegedly awarding tenders to his family members. In another case, the court also issued arrest warrants against top state officials, including the chief secretary and director-general of police.
In both cases, the government managed to get reprieve from the Supreme Court.
"If the government cannot function since it is embroiled in so many cases, it should resign," Tagak said at the BJP office here. "(The government) was in ICU earlier and is now in coma."
Tagak also questioned the use of funds that were sanctioned by the Centre for the state, stating that Rs 3,099 crore was released since March this year as devolution of taxes alone.
He also commented on the alleged turmoil within the ruling Congress in the state.
Several sources have confirmed that there is dissent within the government and Congress leaders from the state have recently met AICC president Sonia Gandhi to try and seek a change in leadership.
Tagak today said he "did not wish to comment on internal matters" but the Congress government "has a responsibility towards the people".
He denied that the BJP had anything to do with the problems in the Congress, stating: "So far no one (Congress MLA) has approached us." He also denied reports of Congress MLA Kalikho Pul joining the BJP.
Pul had been unceremoniously dumped from the Arunachal Pradesh Congress earlier this year following "anti-party activities". However, he had his party membership reinstated after filing a case against the state Congress for breach of its bylaws.
Tagak also said "the BJP is always ready for elections, including mid-term polls".
