Imphal, June 6: Defending champion and top seed Rk. Apollosana Singh started off on a strong note picking his first point in the 21st Kh. Anou Singh Memorial Open Chess Tournament at Kwakeithel in Imphal West.
Deploying the Sicilian defence, Apollosana forced his opponent L. Kiran Singh to surrender in 22 moves, earning full points.
Former Telegraph Chess champion and second seed Kh. Sanjoy Singh also came up with a win against Lawrence Singh.
In the other matches, L. Dhanabir Singh defeated Manisana Singh to earn one point while S. Premjit Singh outplayed Suraj Singh, I. Sanajaoba Singh defeated Ningthem, Rajesh Singh defeated Jackey, Dhonindro Singh outplayed Inao Sharma and Biradhaja registered a draw against K. Kunjabihari Singh to share half-a-point.
Rk. Sudhirsana Singh also picked up his first point beating Jiten Singh, P. Jaminikanta Singh overcame Rana Singh, Rajeshwar Singh defeated Birjit Singh, Pholen Meitei defeated Alex, Anand Sharma defeated Birjit Singh and E. Anand Singh overcame Subhas Chandra Singh.
Subroto Cup
Triveni Public School registered a 4-3 goal win against Nilamani English School through penalty shootout in the Imphal West District Inter-School Subroto Mukherjee Football Tournament at Khuman Lampak sports complex.
In the tie-breaker, O. Bapumacha Singh, H. Hemjit Singh, L. Bipin Singh and A. Rajenkanta converted their kicks for Triveni team while Kh. Sanayaima Singh, Th. Chingkhunganba and N. Bidyananda scored for Nilamani English School.
In another match, South Point School of Science came up with a close victory of 3-2 goals against Nirmala Rani High School.
Milan Singh, Robinson Singh and Kishan Singh delivered the winning goals for South Point while Amarjit Singh and Bipin Singh’s goals for Nirmala Rani High School failed to see them through.
