Guwahati, June 2: City police commissioner Mukesh Agrawal today said the Songbijit faction of the NDFB was "targeting" Guwahati to set "up an extortion network".

The commissioner's warning came in the wake of the arrest of two suspected NDFB "recruiters" who were involved in demanding money from people here using the outfit's letterheads.

"We have reports that the NDFB (S) is attempting to form a network here, but we have already launched our operations and spoilt their intent to a great extent," Agrawal told reporters here this morning.

Yesterday, the police apprehended an NDFB (S) recruiter, Tarun Narzary, from Guwahati railway station at Paltan Bazar. Another recruiter, Bikram Muchahary, was brought from Dimapur in Nagaland by a team of city police yesterday. Narzary hails from Bijni of in Chirang district while Muchahary is from Sonitpur town.

"We had inputs that these two were involved in extorting money from people of the city using the name of the NDFB (S). The police were tracking them for quite some time and yesterday, we apprehended both of them," said Agrawal. "We are now questioning them to know from whom they have collected money."

He said during interrogation, the duo confessed to extorting money to purchase arms and ammunition.

"There are many Bodo students studying in the city. Many unemployed Bodo youths are also here. The NDFB (S) was trying to lure them with promises of easy money," a police source said.

Last month, city police and the crime branch arrested two NDFB (S) cadres, suspected to be a married couple, from the Sivanagar hill area near Panjabari.

Khanin Swargiari hails from Tamulpur of Baksa district and Reswami Boro belongs to Kahibari of Udalguri district.

The police had recovered several mobile phones and SIM cards and bank passbooks. The duo, during investigation, had confessed to their involvement in extortion from Guwahati.
