Jorhat, Oct. 12: Two film personalities of Assam, Jatin Bora and Pabitra Margherita and singer Krishnamoni Chutia, will join the BJP during a function at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Sources in the party told The Telegraph today that the trio would be joining along with some of their followers and well-wishers and it would be a “grand affair”.

“Talks are also on with several more personalities from the Assam cultural fraternity who are willing to join the party,” an office bearer of the state BJP said.

Actor Jatin Bora could not be contacted as he is engaged with a mobile theatre group and is currently on tour but a close aide of his confirmed the development and said it was his own wish to join the party.

Film producer Pabitra Margherita declined to comment saying he has been requested to not talk to the media till the D-day. “I don’t want to comment on this now,” Pabitra said over phone.

Chutia said he would not like to comment on the particular issue at the present. The sources said the three would also be fielded as candidates for the Assembly elections in 2016.

Veteran actors Pranjal Saikia and Toufiq Rahman and singer Jitul Sonowal had joined the BJP before the May parliamentary elections.

The office bearer said the party was drawing up a road map for the 2016 Assembly elections and party president Siddhartha Bhattacharjya would be embarking on a tour to the nook and corner of the state starting mid-November.

Christened Janajagaran Yatra, the tour would be a continuous process and will cover all the 27 districts of the state. “The party president would try to learn about the local problems of the people of particular areas and would also hold discussions with grassroots party workers during the Yatra,” he said.

He said the party launched Mission 84 (to wrest at least 84 of the 126 seats in the Assembly elections) and the Yatra was an integral part of the party’s initiative in this regard. The BJP had emerged winner in 69 Assembly segments in the last parliamentary elections and secured second position in 25. “We are confident that with a little more effort we would be able to win 84 seats in the Assembly elections and form the government,” he said.

While there is still time till the 2016 elections, BJP workers are hoping the Modi wave would just linger till then to see their party to power in Dispur, a hitherto unthinkable idea going by its past performance in the state. “Yes, we will depend on Modi magic to make our bid for power in Assam,” a party leader said.

But he admitted that the party would be judged by its performance at the Centre till then. “It actually has to be a combination of that and the performance of the Congress in Assam... it (Congress) hasn’t given a very good account of itself in its third straight term in power and if the present run continues, then it certainly will be advantage BJP,” he said.
