A fire broke out in a primary school and a rented house at Sarumotoria and Japorigog areas on Tuesday.

The first fire broke out in the kitchen of Sarumotoria primary school around 11.20am after the school’s cook had kept the gas cylinder open for about five minutes and searched for a match box.

In the second incident, a grocery shop owner left the gas open while cooking inside a bamboo-thatched home at Japorigog, burning down three rooms. Two fire tenders from Dispur fire station rushed to the spot and doused the flames at Japorigog (in UB Photos picture above).

Firefighters said they faced problems to reach the spot immediately because of traffic congestion. “The place where the fire broke out is barely five minutes away but it took us more than 20 minutes to reach the spot,” said a fire department source
