Haflong, June 9: The chief executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Debojeet Thaosen, resigned again today before the special session of the council began to prove his majority.
Assam governor P.B. Acharya had on June 3 ordered a special session for a floor test against Thaosen after the BJP staked claim before him to form a new council.
The no-confidence motion was scheduled for June 6 but it could not be moved as the council chairman, Ngamrothang Hmar, resigned.
The BJP later approached the governor and on Tuesday, the governor appointed Suanthangjem Hrangkhol, a member of the council, as pro tem chairman and scheduled the session for today.
The pro tem chairman welcomed the members to the special session and announced that Thaosen had resigned around 10am today.
Niranjan Hojai, the former chief executive member of the council, spoke to The Telegraph and alleged that Thaosen had resigned just to delay the selection process.
Earlier on October 17 last year, he resigned just before the floor test.
"Thaosen knew he did not have a majority so why didn't he resign earlier? The employees are crying for their salaries and have ceased work, which has hampered the development of our district. We want to solve problems as soon as possible but the Thaosen team is only delaying the formation of a stable government in the council," Hojai added.
According to sources, Thaosen's resignation will be sent to the governor and after its approval, the governor will fix a date for selection of a chief executive member, likely to be on June 11 or 13.
Mission Ranjan Das, a BJP leader and Dima Hasao BJP in-charge, who is at Haflong, said, "We will provide a stable government and we shall ensure that the salary problem will be solved soon."
On who would be next council chief, Das said, "We will sit with all the members and Himanta Biswa Sarma will arrive at Haflong this evening and finalise the name."
