Jorabat: A schoolteacher committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on the premises of his residence in Sonapur on the outskirts of the city in the wee hours of Wednesday as he reportedly could not bear work pressure of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update process.

Sources said Subash Chandra Kalita, 52, a teacher of Sonapur Lower Primary School, was very depressed as a booth-level officer and was unable to cope with work he was entrusted with by the administration.

It is suspected that he took the extreme step when his family members were asleep.

His body was spotted hanging from a tree in the backyard of his residence by his family around 8am.

The Supreme Court has set June 30 deadline for publication of the complete draft of the NRC.

When contacted, circle officer of Sonapur Dhrubajyoti Hazarika said Kalita was a very sincere man and was always enthusiastic about the work assigned to him.

Commenting on the workload of the NRC update process, he said: "This is in fact relaxing period for booth-level officers as they do not have to visit houses for NRC-related work."

He said he had not received any complaint regarding the booth-level officers' workload. He added that Kalita might have been assigned some election-related duties.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post mortem. An investigation has been initiated into the incident.

Kalita is survived by his wife and two daughters.
