Guwahati, May 3: The People’s Linguistic Survey of India today said the number of speakers of Assam’s two scheduled languages, Assamese and Bodo, is increasing over the years while the other languages are showing a declining trend.

“The survey indicates that the speakers of the two scheduled languages in Assam are increasing,” the media founder trustee of PLSI, G.N. Devy, said today.

He added that because of the lack of opportunity in schooling and less limited commercial utility, people from other languages are changing over to these two scheduled languages.

The PLSI is a linguistic survey conducted by the Gujarat-based Bhasa Research and Publication Centre. It was initiated in Assam on February 19 and will continue till June. The final report will be released on July this year.

PLSI conducted its two workshops at Gauhati University in February and April.

“Altogether 60 resource persons are involved in the survey in Assam while the number is 2,000 in the entire country,” Devy said.

“We appeal to all the smaller linguistic groups who feel that they have remained outside the survey to contact us,” said Bibha Bharali, who is involved in the survey.
