Shillong, June 6: Kamai ia ka Hok (earn righteousness), a song by Shillong's very own folk-fusion band Summersalt, will feature in an upcoming docu-fiction Deaftones that will highlight the life of the Khasi people living in neighbouring Bangladesh.

The Khasi song is a call to people to rediscover the values set by their ancestors hundreds of years ago.

Kamai ia ka Hok is a Khasi concept on responsible lifestyle. It invites people to live the values of grace, honesty, justice and accountability.

The song also stresses the importance of forming a "united front" despite differences to fight the glaring powers of evil.

Deaftones by Md Anwar Hossain, a Bangladeshi filmmaker, documents the resilience of the Khasi people, their faith in God and in themselves and the challenges around their land, language, culture and livelihood.

"After knowing the genuine intention behind the film and how it will stand a chance to help the Khasi people in Bangladesh, we felt that it is right for us to give the song to the filmmaker#. We did this inthe larger interest of the Khasi people in that country," Baiaineh C. Shangpliang, a member of Summersalt band, said today.

Baiaineh added that the members of Summersalt had authored a few songs touching on the fine lines of cultural identity of the Khasi-Pnar people.

"We have always felt that songs written on ethnic cultural themes could creatively belong to the authors and should be made freely available for public," he said.

With this in mind, the members decided to give Kamai ia ka Hok to Deaftones.

Managing member of Summersalt Kit Shangpliang said: "As we wrote these songs, we are also conscious that we never had the opportunity to ask for specific permission from the people whether they live here or in Ri Bhoi or in Ri War, or in the hills of our Pnar friends. These songs dwell on the philosophy, history and anthropology of our people. We do not feel morally right to restrict others from singing it."

This will be Summersalt's second venture into films after one of their originals made it to the world of Bollywood as part of the upcoming film Rock On 2.

Throwing some light about Deaftones, Hossain said: "This film is about the Khasi people who live in Jaflong, Srimongal, Nizpat, Jaintiapur and Sylhet. I am happy I could facilitate the documentation of such brave personalities in celluloid form."?

Deaftones, which is scheduled for release later this year, is likely to be screened in India and abroad.
