Somokanta, 5 more in lead

Imphal, June 28: Fifteenth seed H. Somokanta upset second seed Kh. Sanjoy Singh to collect full points to stand with nine points in the first Kh. Ramnarayan Shastree Memorial State-Level Open Chess Tournament, 2016, organised by Juvenile Club under the aegis of Manipur Chess Association at Tera Sapam Leirak.

In the third round, Sanjoy and Somokanta started off with six points each. However, the latter suprised Sanjoy to pull off the victory today.

Five other players shared the top spot with Somokanta, including A. Chakritombi Singh, who beat N. Pari to reach nine points. Y. Pritamkumar, H. Jacky, O. Ningthem Singh and A. Pholen beat their opponents to stay on nine points.

Fifth seed S. Premjit Singh won the Kh. Anou Chess title recently. He was beaten by Y. Pritamkumar and stay with six points.

Trailing the leaders at the moment are top seed L. Lalgopal and third seed N. Bangkim Singh with seven points. Lalgopal beat Rk. Dutta while Bangkim beat Kh. Pinky.

Other players on six points include N. Brojen, Chittaranjan T, Rk. Dutta, Kh. Oley, Shakespeare L, M. Mudhusudon, S. Goodcha, N. Shantikumar, K. Jiban, Ch. Maheshkumar, Bilesh K, N. Pari, Ch. Shamba, H. Maniton, A. Sarat and Bit Irom.

Football: The All-Manipur Football Association said the AIFF has invited club nominations from the state associations who are willing to participate in the second Division League 2016-17 to submit required documents on or before July 7 at the AMFA. Interested clubs must produce the rank of the team in the local league division as well certificate of incorporation or registration. A demand draft for Rs 1 lakh as participation fee, which is refundable for those clubs who failed to get a clearance from AIFF to play in the second Division League, needs to be paid to the AIFF.

Athletics: The Manipur Master Athletics Association said 27 athletes, including 17 women, have been selected to join the Indian squad for the 12th World Master Athletics Championship to be held in Perth, Australia, from October 26 to November 6. The athletes are to report at MMAA president L. Ajit Singh's residence at Singjamei by July 15 for completion of necessary formalities.
