Guwahati: Barpeta and Biswanath Chariali stormed into the quarterfinals of the inter-district junior football championship, notching identical 5-1 victories over Rangiya and Bokakhat respectively on Wednesday. Hosts Karbi Anglong will take on Gossaigaon in the second quarterfinal encounter tomorrow. Silchar have already booked their berth in the semi-finals. Aka Bhuyan, Ajit Basumatary, Promode Swargiary, Habib Baruah scored for Barpeta, while an own goal took the tally to five. Bipul Deka scored the reducer for Rangiya. Biswanath Chariali scored through Salina Toppo, M.A. Singh, M. Jadingmasingra, Gautam Daimary and Ismail Khongrun. Bisawjit Karmakar scored Bokakhat’s lone goal.

Player dead

Silchar: Former Ranji Trophy player, Shyamapada Bhattacharjee, was run over by a railway engine at Badarpur railway junction, 25 km west from here, on Tuesday. The 59-year-old senior railway guard was a wicketkeeper for Railways in the Ranji Trophy.

Kick-off

Guwahati: The Guwahati Sports Association’s third Joymati Das inter-office football championship will begin on Thursday with SP Office taking on Reserve Bank of India in the opener at Nehru stadium here. The meet, scheduled to start on June 30, was put off till Thursday after the ground was rendered unplayable by heavy rain.

ONGC camp

Guwahati: The two-week coaching camp for table tennis and tennis at Nazira and Sivasagar, organised by the ONGC, Assam Asset, ended last Friday. Nearly 160 children participated in the meet.

Jokai held

Dibrugarh: Jokai Jeuti Sangha and Jamira Yubak Sangha played a 1-1 draw in the opening encounter of the Dibrugarh first division football league on Wednesday. Bipul Patra scored for Jokai while Udhabb Sonowal struck the equaliser.
