A still from the film Why

At a time when most producers of Assamese cinema shy away from investing in new projects, some young directors have managed to make full-length feature films in DVD format and get them released in theatres.

Debutante Purabi Sarma’s Why, produced by Minati Sharma under the banner of Jay Chandra Productions, is such an attempt. Why premiered at Guwahati’s Vandana Cinema on June 25.

Using a simple narrative style, the film deals with a kidney trade racket. A police officer who poses as a student to expose the nexus operating from a college, enlists the support of a professor and the culprits are nabbed.

But a phone call from a top cop sets the guilty free. Just as they are about to leave, the police officer shoots them dead.

Though a tad melodramatic, the story has its twists and turns.

On the acting front, the seasoned Dibyajyoti Das holds fort as the police officer. He is well supported by the rest of the cast.

Prabhat Srama’s script is innovative and Krishna Shah’s cinematography adds value to the effort.
