Silchar, May 19: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the 57 mountain division of the army for “technology transfer” to the troops.

Director of the NIT Col. (retd) J.S. Virk today told The Telegraph that the decision to offer consultancy services was part of the scheme to generate funds for investing in the development of the institute.

The college, formerly known as Regional Engineering College, was recently upgraded to a National Institute of Technology in June last year. The college celebrated its silver jubilee in the 540-acre campus at Silcoorie near here on Friday.

Col. Virk said the institute has also decided to float an “incubation facility” in its campus to help develop an information technology software park in Cachar district, which has the potential to support such a venture. He said the NIT would soon form a core group of specialists to draw up a feasibility project on the proposed IT park.

Martyrs’ Day: The 42nd Martyr’s Day was today observed in the Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts in the memory of the 11 people killed by police at the Silchar railway terminus in 1961. The incident happened during the language agitation launched in demand of official status for Bengali.
