Imphal, Jan. 19: Shiroy Polo beat Sangai Polo 6-5 at Mapal Kangjeibung here today to trot into the final of the first Statehood Day Women's Polo Tournament, organised by the All Manipur Polo Association.
Both teams were neck and neck throughout the contest.
The first chukker wasn't very fruitful for either team but Shiroy galloped ahead in the second chukker when Julia Smith and Kh. Habe Devi scored goals in quick succession.
The two players from the US, Carly Persano of Sangai and Julia Smith of Shiroy, brought the crowd to life, never missing a hit throughout the match.
One player from the US is featured in each of the four teams participating in the meet.
Shiroy continued to ride hard in the third chukker with A. Romabati thumping in two goals, while Smith chipped in with one goal.
But Sangai staged a comeback with Dhaneshwori Devi and Carly Persano scoring a goal each to make it 4-5.
However, Smith shone again and made the score 6-4.
Niloo Rk. knocked in a consolation goal for Sangai but it was too late to save the match.
In another match, United States Polo Association thumped Kangla Polo 3-0 to move into the final as well.
Tiamo Hudspeth struck all three goals of the match.
The final between Shiroy Polo and United States Polo Association will be played on Thursday, marking the Statehood Day of Manipur.
Inter-college football: Biramangol College, Sowombung, settled for a 2-2 goal draw against Shree Shree Goura Govinda Girls' College in the A. Borchand Singh Memorial Manipur University Inter-College Football Tournament at Manipur University, Canchipur. Syed Buckshera scored twice for Biramangol College, while Tejibala Devi and Roni Devi fetched a goal each for Goura Govinda College.
