SAI sweep kitty on Day One

Guwahati, Dec. 31: Trainees from the Sports Authority of India’s Guwahati sub-centre stole the show on the first day of the three-day Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) inter-club athletics meet at the Nehru Stadium here today.

The SAI trainees claimed 10 of the 23 medals awarded today. The SAI athletes polished off the girls’ under-20 long jump and 100m sprint events, claiming all the medals.

Dipali Dewri bagged the gold in both long jump and sprint. Bobita Ingty and Vishali Deuri won the silver and bronze medals in long jump, while Alpana Boro claimed the second spot in the 100m race. Dipali leapt 4.65m to finish first.

SAI boys snatched the first position in the under-18 and under-20 100m dashes. Chow Indrajit Monsai won the under-18 gold, while Priyam Saikia bagged the under-20 first prize. Subal Das of Damdoma and Mrigendra Nath Boro finished second and third respectively in the under-18, while Sankar Dey of Maharana Athletics Club and Girindra Boro of SAI won the silver and bronze medals in the under-20 event.

Gopal Das became the fastest runner of the tournament, claiming the men’s 100m gold. Jagadish Kumar of PRC Club and Shyam Pradhan took the silver and bronze medals.

Theopil Barla of SAI won the men’s middle-distance 1,500m race, followed by Apurba Rabha and Asrafuddin of Maharana Athletics Club.

In the boys’ under-18 1,500m run, Sashanka Rabha and Ajay Boro of Maharana Athletics Club finished first and second respectively, while Rohini Kalita of Young Blue Club took the bronze medal.

Moon Das of Damdoma won the under-14 triathlon gold, followed by Bhaskar Kumar Choudhury of Nichol’s High School and Wilbert Tumung of S.A.S. Sarapara.

One hundred and fifty seven athletes, representing 14 GSA-affiliated clubs and four institutions, are participating in the three-day meet. GSA general secretary Rana Goswami inaugurated the tournament. Former athletes C.K. Bhagawati and Tayabun Nisha, who attended the inaugural function as guests of honour, were felicitated on the occasion.
