Imphal, Feb. 1: Supply of essential commodities to Manipur and inter-state bus services of the state were affected as transporters stayed off the roads today following a 24-hour bandh called in the Sadar Hills areas.
The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee imposed the bandh from midnight last night in the Sadar Hills in Senapati district demanding revenue district status for the Kuki-dominated area.
The committee demanded that Governor Shivinder Singh Sidhu mention the government’s promise to upgrade Sadar Hills to a revenue district in his address in the Assembly. They also demanded an assurance from the government during the current session.
However, the governor did not mention the Sadar Hills issue during his address on the opening day of the Assembly today.
The snub may not go down well with the demand committee.
An official report said no supply truck entered Imphal and neither did any leave the state capital.
Passenger services between Imphal and other state capitals in the Northeast were also affected.
Both the national highways of Imphal-Kohima and Imphal-Jiribam pass through Sadar Hills.
There was however, no report of any bandh-related violence.
A spokesman for the demand committee said it would wait till the session was over on February 5.
If the Okram Ibobi Singh government failed to give a commitment to concede to the demand, the committee would launch a series of agitation in the state, he said.
