Kokrajhar, May 13: The BTC administration today handed over Rs 2 lakh as aid to the family of international archer Pratima Boro, who committed suicide on May 3.

BTC deputy chief Kampha Borgoyary handed over the cheque to Pratima’s father Ramal Boro at his office in the BTC secretariat, Kokrajhar.

Handing over the cheque, Borgoyary termed the death of Pratima “a great loss to the sports arena and the Bodo community”.

“She was the pride of Bodoland,” he said.

The 22-year-old international archer allegedly committed suicide at an ongoing national team selection camp in Pune after being depressed for sometime. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room on the Army Sports Training Centre premises.

Pratima’s body was discovered after her fellow archers, including roommate Himani Boro who also belongs to Assam, went looking for her after she did not turn up for the morning drill the following day.

Pratima’s adhya shradha will be held tomorrow at her village, Malaguri in the Fakiragram area.

Pratima was among the nine players from the region selected for the senior Indian camp in Pune which began on April 10 and will end on June 10. A prime hope for the Rio Olympics and a Tata Archery Academy, Jamshedpur product, Pratima was an NF Railway employee and trained at the SAI centre in Kokrajhar.

She started her career in 2003, was a member of the Indian recurve women’s squad for the 2009 World Cup Stage IV in Shanghai and World Championships in the same year and was also a champion in the Asian Grand Prix in 2008.
