Guwahati: Earth's dynamic environmental processes, views of planets and the moon will be available for viewing on a 6-feet diameter luminous globe at the Regional Science Centre from Thursday.

The Science on a Sphere system has been installed at a cost of Rs 2.35 crore, to mark 25 years or the silver jubilee of the Science Museum, as it is popularly known. It will be inaugurated by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of minister of science and technology Kashab Mahanta, director general of National Council of Science Museums A.S. Mane-kar and other dignitaries.

The globe, suspended from the ceiling, will act as a spherical screen and four high resolution projectors, at 90 degrees angle, will project moving images that will wrap around it. The system will use 520 datasets, 40 of them real time, obtained from satellites, enabling display of latest atmospheric conditions on the earth.

The datasets are being obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the US, which supported the installation of the facility. The datasets are divided into categories of atmosphere, ocean, land, astronomy and others.

Project coordinator Basudev Mandal said, "The system will benefit science students as well as the general public. This is the sixth such system in the country. Research will also be facilitated. Science should be viewed as fun."

The centre has a footfall of 2,000 to 2,500 every day, on an average. The tickets for the three shows will cost Rs 40 for the public and Rs 20 for students. Arrangement for special shows can be made.
