Rituparna triumphs

Guwahati, June 24: Arghya Das of West Bengal and Rituparna Choudhury of Odisha annexed double crown in the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament that concluded at the All Assam Tennis Association Complex here today.

While Arghya lifted the under-18 boys' singles and doubles titles, Rituparna walked away with the under-16 and under-18 girls' singles honours.

The singles sixth seed Arghya, who won the doubles title along with Akshat Agarwal (Bengal), defeating Siddharth Choudhury of Assam and Mingki Talom of Arunachal Pradesh 6-2, 2-6, 12-10 in the final yesterday, toppled top seed Mingki 6-4, 7-5 for the singles title today.

In the semi-finals yesterday, Arghya beat unseeded statemate Dhananjai Govind 6-1, 6-1, while Mingki defeated unseeded Odisha opponent Kabir Hans 6-2, 6-1.

Second seed Rituparna upset top seed Lenien Jamir of Assam for both the titles today. She made short work of Lenien 6-2, 6-0 for the under-16 crown and then beat her 7-5, 6-2 in the under-18 final.

In the under-18 semi-finals yesterday, Rituparna beat Lakshmi S.V. Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-4 and Lenien prevailed over unseeded statemate Kristi Boro 6-1, 6-1.

In the under-16 semi-finals, Rituparna defeated sixth seed Ananya Kothakota of Andhra 6-4, 6-1, while Lenien got the better of third seed Ishika Gupta of Bengal 6-2, 6-1.

The boys' under-16 singles final also saw top seed Sheikh Md Iftikhar of Assam bite the dust. Second seed Kavan Somu Kumar of Karnataka emerged winner after Iftikhar conceded the match with an injury when Kavan was leading 4-1 (30-0). Iftikhar yesterday came back from a set behind to overcome third seed Kabir Hans 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, while Kavan got the better of Aryan Pathange of Karnataka 6-2, 6-3 in the round of four.

Top-seeded Karnataka siblings Arnav and Aryan Pathange lifted the under-16 boys' crown, defeating second seed duo of Kritanta Sarma and Hrykpb Borah of Assam 6-1, 6-3 yesterday.

In the girls' under-18 doubles final yesterday, top seed pair of Lenien and Ishika lifted the trophy, making short work of second seed duo of Rituparna and Ameek K. Bath of Odisha 6-2, 6-0.
