Guwahati, April 6: Calcutta University will facilitate research and study on Assam historian and second vice-chancellor of Gauhati University, Suryya Kumar Bhuyan.

The Suryya Kumar Bhuyan Memorial Trust has offered Calcutta University an endowment fund to help it facilitate study on Bhuyan's work.

"We are in touch with the trust. We hope to implement the project soon," said Suranjan Das, the vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, while talking to The Telegraph on the sidelines of a programme at Gauhati University today.

Das today unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of Bhuyan in front of the New Arts Building of the university here.

The statue was made by sculptor Gautam Pal from Calcutta at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.

After inaugurating the statue, Das highlighted how as a vice-chancellor, Bhuyan had developed close relationships with Calcutta University and strove for the development of Gauhati University.

"Gauhati University would not have attained its current position without dedicated efforts of Bhuyan," he said.

The names of Presidency College and Calcutta University, his alma mater, appear in many places in Bhuyan's writings.

The trust's chairperson and Bhuyan's granddaughter, Banti Bhuyan, said they would be happy to offer a similar endowment fund for Gauhati University if the varsity was willing.

The trust, formed in January last year, has taken up many plans and programmes for the next five years.

These include compilation and publication of all the works of Bhuyan in several volumes, putting up statues of Bhuyan in important places, translation of some of his books into English and other languages and launch of a website. It created the Dr Suryya Kumar Bhuyan Endowment Chair in IIT Guwahati.

The trust will soon install a bronze bust of Bhuyan made by Gautam Pal in front of Cotton College Library.
