Dibrugarh, June 1: Rajib Dhar of Guwahati clinched the champions’ title in the 31st edition of the All Assam Chess Championship, which concluded at the Sivasagar Girls’ College yesterday.
Rajib ended the meet with 9 points from 11 rounds after winning his last game against Tralokya Nanda to climb to the top spot.
Former champion Utpal Baruah (OIL) had to remain satisfied with the second spot even after finishing with a score of 9 points. The arbiters on the basis of progressive scoring decided the position.
Santanu Borpatragohain (Sivasagar) was placed third with 8.5 points.
Another Sivasagar player Manjit Tao bagged the fourth spot with 8 points while with the same number of points Jorhat’s Tralokya Nanda was placed fifth.
Madhab Sarma (Mangaldoi) with 8 points came sixth, while Sivasagar’s Prajit Phukon was placed seventh with the same number of points.
Mahasweta Kumar of Mangaldoi bagged the eighth spot with 8 points.
With 7.5 points each, Guwahati’s Chiraranjan Bhuyan bagged the ninth spot while Sivasagar’s Priyanshu Saikia took the tenth position.
The first five position holders were given cash prizes of Rs 4,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively apart from trophies and certificates.
Sivasagar district won both the prizes for best district as well as best men’s team.
The prizes were distributed in a ceremony presided over by the All Assam Chess Association president Bibhuti Gogoi. Additional deputy commissioner of Sivasagar Anima Saikia was also present.
