Guwahati, Oct. 6: Assam can heave a sigh of relief during Durga Puja as the state power utility has assured uninterrupted supply from Sashthi (Friday) to Dashami.

The state requires around 1,500 megawatts (MW) daily. During Durga Puja, the daily requirement goes up by additional 75MW to 100MW. The Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) will meet the extra demand by purchasing power from Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited in New Delhi.

"This year, we will try to provide uninterrupted power supply round the clock in all districts during Durga Puja. We usually require an additional 75MW-100MW power in addition to the daily requirement of about 1,500MW during the festival. The New Delhi-based Tata Power will provide us the additional power," said APDCL public relations officer Jatin Khanikar.

The APDCL has set up control rooms in all districts for the people to report any disruption in supply.

"Power supply may be disrupted in case of a fault or if a wire snaps. In such circumstances, consumers should immediately contact the control room in their respective districts. Our teams will reach the designated place and repair the fault to restore supply. If anyone notices any fault in power lines or posts they should immediately contact us to avoid any untoward incident," he said.

Last year, a person was electrocuted near a pandal at Fatasil Ambari here. To avoid such incidents, all Puja organising committees have to obtain permission for power supply from the APDCL.

"While the APDCL will be providing uninterrupted power supply to all areas during Durga Puja, it is mandatory for all organising committees to obtain permission from the corporation for power supply. The APDCL staff will be available to attend to any problem but the committees will have to ensure that loose wires are not hanging around the pandal. They will have to keep fire extinguishers, sand and water in adequate quantities to prevent any fire incident," said Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner M. Angamuthu.
