Jorhat: The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) will soon introduce prepaid electric meters for consumers in this town.

A pre-paid meter has a buzzer to alert the consumer as soon as units reduce to minimum and a recharge is needed. A push button connected to the meter will help the consumer see readings and regulate number of units for consumption. A consumer can also get the meter recharged for months at one go.

P.K Dutta, APDCL chief executive officer, Jorhat electric division, told reporters on Wednesday: "We will install 4,000 prepaid electric meters as a pilot project. We are targeting mostly commercial consumers. We have been providing both single and three-phase connection to consumers. The meters will help the consumers keep track of their energy consumption."
