Guwahati, March 4: Ulfa vice-chairman Pradip Gogoi was released from the Guwahati Central Jail this evening after the designated court accepted his bail bonds.

The decks for Gogoi’s release were cleared after his bail bonds were submitted and subsequently accepted by the court this afternoon, nearly 10 days after he was actually granted bail.

Walking out of the jail around 6.45pm, Gogoi made an appeal to the government for the unconditional release of the other jailed leaders of Ulfa in order to facilitate peace talks with the outfit to end the three-decade-long “Indo-Assam conflict”.

A large crowd apart from the relatives of Gogoi, advocates and security personnel gathered in front of the Guwahati Central Jail at Fancy Bazar this evening.

Gogoi was received with a bouquet of flowers and a gamocha after he walked out of prison.

“I pay my tribute to the martyrs and express my solidarity with their families and those who suffered repression during our struggle,” he said.

The Ulfa leader said he would first get treatment for his ailments and thereafter play any role he is entrusted with by the outfit.

Gogoi appealed to everyone to contribute and create a conducive and positive atmosphere to solve the Ulfa problem politically.

The Ulfa leader had six Tada cases registered against him. He was granted bail in three cases on February 19 and in the remaining three cases on February 23.

Gogoi, who hails from Betabari Mouthgaon in Sivasagar district, was in jail since his arrest from New Market area in central Calcutta in 1998.

The Ulfa vice-chairman’s counsel Nabasmita Gogoi said the bail bonds were furnished after receiving a direction from him this morning.

“The court accepted his bail bonds this afternoon,” she said.

The Ulfa leader will leave for Sivasagar tomorrow morning.

Gogoi’s prolonged stay in jail despite being granted bail had prompted speculations on his move to stay back as a “strategy” to come out with the other jailed leaders as and when they got bail.

”It is a very fluid situation where things can change even overnight,” a source said.
